Art City Tour

Whether you want to take this tour by foot, by bike or by bus, you’ll have several different routes to choose from and they all lead you to sample the cultural offerings in downtown San Jose. You’ll visit museums, galleries, parks and plazas and get the chance to purchase some of the artists’ wares. The tour takes place in the evening and is absolutely free. Check the calendar; if you’re in town for an Art City Tour, don’t let the opportunity pass you by.

Costa Rican Independence Day – September 15

Every September 15, Costa Rican flags are waving as the country celebrates the independence of all of Central America from Spanish rule in 1821. You’ll find much merriment in the streets, with music, dancing, lanterns and parades. Want to know an interesting fact? Costa Rica didn’t have to fight for its independence; Spain supported the liberation.

Festival de la Luz – December

The Festival of Lights, famously known as Festival de la Luz, heralds the start of the Christmas and New Year’s celebrations. It’s consistently listed as the top attraction in San Jose, and for good reason. The streets come alive with floats, costumes, live music and fireworks. The event draws thousands of people and the country’s best bands. If you’re lucky enough to be in town, this might be your favorite part of the trip.

Virgin of Los Angeles Day in Costa Rica – August 2

Every August 2, the faithful journey to the Basílica de Nuestra Señora de Los Ángeles. Whether they need a miracle or they’re just curious, thousands come to honor Costa Rica’s patron saint on this feast day of the Virgin of Los Angeles. Inside, you’ll find the statue of La Negrita, or Black Madonna, which legend tells us has healing powers.
